Training and Qualifications
Being a Special requires certain qualities - a real liking for people, good communication skills, integrity, sound judgment and a sense of humour. Your time commitment is about one or two evenings per month. In addition, volunteers must be:
- A national of a country within the European Economic Area or, if a national of a country outside the EEA, have the right to reside in this country without restrictions,
- Physically and medically fit, and
- Aged 18½ or over.
The City of London Police needs your skills, experience and talents.
On successful completion of assessment by the City of London Police, you will join a training course at a Police Training Center in the City. Training covers criminal law, public order laws and court procedure, first aid and self defence - to provide recruits with the skills and abilities to deal competently with a wide range of operational incidents as a Police Officer. Training is a combination of lessons, demonstrations and practical exercises, with short written tests on each subject.
After passing out from Training School you will be under the supervision of an experienced officer. When your supervisory officer is satisfied that you have reached the standard required then you will be allowed to exercise your own responsibility on patrol and thus take an active and positive role in assisting the City Police on the streets and in the community.
You will also attend continuation training to keep you up-to-date with changing law and procedures. Long Service and Good Conduct medals may be awarded after completing 9 years' service
