Real Life Weddings: Our Perfect Day

Real Life Weddings: Our Perfect Day - 19/02/2018

‘Our perfect day’
We host dozens of weddings throughout the year at the HAC. The promise of a summer drinks reception in our five-acres of garden is often what draws couples to the venue. But as Alex and Will discovered, Armoury House has so much to offer on the inside too. Alex takes us through their special day and tells us why they feel our historic venue was the perfect choice for their winter wedding.
What first attracted you to the venue?
I was after a wedding venue which worked for a winter wedding, but also had fabulous space outside in case the sun shone! The Long Room is big enough to comfortably seat all my guests and there are lots of smaller break out rooms for drinks, supplier equipment and even baby feeding. Being in central London made it very practical for us and our guests as far as transport was concerned, plus there are lots of hotel options nearby – ranging from affordable to luxury.

What is your favourite space in the venue?
Definitely the Long Room – the deep red colours of the d├ęcor and the wooden panelling are so beautiful.

Tell us about your menu – what made it special?
Will and I wanted a very simple wedding breakfast suitable for a cold January so the chefs at the HAC created a bespoke menu based on exactly what we asked for. We went for lamb and mint sausages with rosemary-infused mash, braised red cabbage and red onion gravy. It went down really well with all of our guests. The ingredients were all of very high quality and the tasting day was really well executed.
How involved was the venue team?
They were amazing, they went above and beyond in every sense, it was totally stress free for us. They did all the little things like drawing up the table plan and writing the name places, plus they liaised with all the suppliers. Everyone says organising a wedding is stressful - not once did I feel stressed during the whole process! On the day I turned up and Claire greeted me, showed me where I needed to be and what I needed to do - her calm manner definitely rubbed off on me. No ask was too big or too small and they came back really quickly on any question we had.

What little touches did you implement that made the day more special?
As a member of the Regiment I wanted to involve some military elements, like Pikemen and Musketeers greeting guests after the ceremony and the Corps of drums performing at a break during dinner. We also used a lot of candles throughout the Long Room which worked really well in creating atmosphere.

Describe the style of your wedding and how this worked with the venue.
We wanted to get married in the winter so an indoors venue which made the guests feel warm and cosy – it was a relaxed affair, although reasonably traditional. As far as decorations go, we didn’t need a huge amount of flowers as the room is stunning already.

What was the stand out moment from your day?
Dancing the night away! The Long Room transformed from a dinner venue to a dance floor in minutes. Also, for me, being surrounded by a Regiment which I’ve been a part of for years was incredibly important.

And finally… any tips for couples getting married at the HAC?
Trust the events teams on their recommendations as they’ve organised so many weddings at the HAC and really do have your best interests at heart – it’s certainly not a venue who are constantly trying to get more money from you. Also, make the most of the break out rooms available so people really get to see the whole place. We used the Drum Room, Medal Room, Court Room, Queen’s Room and Ante Room in addition to our main space.
