What to expect at our Taste of Italy event

What to expect at our Taste of Italy event - 09/05/2017

On 16th May, the Events Team at the HAC is hosting a fabulous evening of Italian wine tasting to celebrate the arrival of spring.

The soiree will take place on the Terrace here at Armoury House and we expect it to be a glorious occasion. To give you a flavour of what our guests can expect, we’ve asked our specialist suppliers, Ellis of Richmond, to highlight six of the most exciting wines that will be showcased on the night.

Simon Powys Maurice from Ellis of Richmond says, ‘I think these six examples represent the re-emerging face of Italian wine. They are made from classic grape varieties across the country, but the wines themselves are not particularly well-known. I think guests at the party will really enjoy the variety we’ve selected.’

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, Conti di Buscareto, Marches 2016

Tasting notes… This wine is dry and full-bodied, harvested late to ensure richness and concentration. It’s aromatic with notes of almonds, citrus and white flowers. The floral notes follow through on the palate. It’s a well-balanced, crisp white wine with a long finish and an amazing depth of flavour.

Match it with… Seafood, white meat, cold meat appetizers and rustic dishes.

Fruilano, Le Monde, Friuli Venezia Giulia 2016

Tasting notes… This wine has a fine and delicate nose of fresh flowers, citrus lemon and green apple. The palate is crisp and dry with notes of apple, peach and pear with a subtle floral note. It has a good weight on the mid-palate, perfectly balanced by a fresh acidity which leaves a clean finish.

Match it with… Soups, broths and savoury fish dishes.

Pecorino ‘Civitas’ Biodynamic, Cantina Orsagna, Abruzzo 2015

Tasting notes… Bright gold in colour with an aromatic nose. A soft and pleasant wine with aromas of citrus, ripe pear, peach and orange blossom. The palate is clean and rich with a pleasing mineral complexity and a long finish.

Match it with… River fish, risotto, chicken dishes and vegetables.

Schiava ‘Campaner’, Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro, Alto Adige 2015

Tasting notes… This Schiava is a bright ruby red in colour with a fresh fruity nose with raspberry aromas which are typical for the grape. The palate has soft red fruits with supple tannins and a long, lasting finish.

Match it with… Nicoise salad, cold meats or mild cheeses.

Primitivo ‘Rumina’t Biodynamic, Cantina Orsagna, Abruzzo 2015

Tasting notes… This Primitivo is a bright ruby red in colour. On the nose, aromas of black cherry and violets leap from the glass. The palate is soft and smooth with notes of sweet black cherries and blackcurrant fruits combined with notes of cinnamon and cloves supported by lovely soft tannins. Well balanced with a fresh acidity and a long, fruity finish.

Match it with… Dry cured meats and mature cheeses.
